Project Scope

Revamping an existing website to have a better user flow

One of the local ice cream spots in Athens, Ga that I frequented, is Lil’ Ice Cream Dude’s Cool World Ice Cream Shop. Having been there a lot of times already, I noticed that their Ice Cream shop is different from the other major brand name competitions in Athens such as Ben & Jerry’s. Cool World Ice Cream Shop comes with a unique story that most people can get behind, however their current site setup has a couple of pain points which I will address in my redesign. This project was constructed and developed during my time in the Emerging Media Masters program at the University of Georgia.

Ideation + Execution

To understand the need for a redesignis to first understand the pain points of the website. Upon visiting the Cool World Ice Cream shop website, the overall purpose of the site as the “Shop, Catering, and Speaking” is apparent. However, when it comes to their location, it is not instantaneously shown on their site. You have to hunt it down on the “Visit Beau” tab on their page. Another issue I noticed is that the menu is not on the main website, and that defeats the main purpose of the business -selling ice cream. To find out the flavors the shop has, you have to find the menu in the google directory when you search for the shop.

The goal of this redesign was to create a cohesive look that would not cause any disruption of other content located on the site as well as distract customers from the main point of the business. As I went through the ideation process, I decided that the redesign would have:

With the goal in mind, I created three target audiences and personas for this project, Micah, Analu, and Joan.

Micah Persona
Joan Persona
Analu Persona

I also incorporated an initial customer journey map using Joan as the main focus as she is the most technologically challenged out of the three personas. Below you can view the journey.

Initial Customer Journey

Once I was able to clarify the problem and user flow the website needed, I made notes on the original website and was able to brainstorm what the prototype would look like and executed it. You can view the presentation where I walk through the whole process below.

After creating the prototype, I created a future state customer journey map using the changes I made.
